“How do I know to drop or keep the “e” on a silent-e word when I add a suffix?

If your students ever ask these questions, then this is the word sort for you.

Silent-e Spelling Rule:

In words ending in silent e:

- drop the e when you add a suffix that begins with a vowel

- keep the e when you add a suffix that begins with a consonant

Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring irregular words.
Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words (e.g., cage -> badge; boy -> boil).
