📖 What is Phonemic Awareness?

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. It's a critical foundation for reading success!

🎯 Perfect For:

  • Phonemic awareness instruction
  • Beginning reading skills
  • Sound segmentation practice
  • Literacy centers and stations
  • Small group instruction
  • RTI and intervention
  • 1st Grade and struggling readers

💡 How It Works:

  1. Teacher pronounces the word slowly, stretching it out by sound
  2. Student repeats the word
  3. Student counts the number of phonemes (sounds, not letters)
  4. Student slides one counter into each circle while saying each sound
  5. Example: "mop" = /m/ /o/ /p/ (3 sounds, 3 counters)

🔊 Sound Segmentation:

Students learn to break words into individual phonemes:

  • cat = /c/ /a/ /t/ (3 sounds)
  • dog = /d/ /o/ /g/ (3 sounds)
  • ship = /sh/ /i/ /p/ (3 sounds - sh is one sound!)

✅ Teacher Benefits:

  • 60 task cards provide extensive practice
  • Pictures support understanding
  • Hands-on with manipulatives
  • Builds critical pre-reading skills
  • Perfect for intervention
  • Reusable year after year

🔧 Materials Needed:

  • Task cards (print and laminate)
  • Counters, chips, tokens, or small objects
  • Can use coins, buttons, or any small manipulatives

📚 Why This Matters:

Phonemic awareness is one of the best predictors of reading success! Students who can segment words into individual sounds are better prepared to decode and spell words.
