Students build phonemic awareness and phonological awareness by segmenting words into sounds or syllables (which is not always the number of letters).

 

 1. Pronounce the word slowly, stretching it out by sound. Have the student repeat the word.

2. Have the student count the number of phonemes in the word, not necessarily the number of letters. For example, mop has three phonemes and will use three spaces. /m/, /o/, /p/

4. The student to slide one colored counter, etc. in each circular spaces as he/she repeats the word.
